The course Advanced Qualitative Methodology (5 credits) provides knowledge regarding methods for analysing qualitative data, principles for trustworthiness and transferability in qualitative research, and data/method triangulation including mixed methods. The course is designed for doctoral students planning or conducting qualitative research, but also students who use qualitative data as part of their mixed methods projects. The aim of the course is to provide advanced knowledge and understanding of qualitative research, and to ensure a trustworthy application of qualitative methods in Health Care research. Participants may use their own research for the study assignments, or apply examples from current qualitative research.
The course requires half time study, and consists of lectures and seminars during two weeks, and an examination a few weeks later. In-between the students are expected to engage in literature studies and producing a written examination assignment, also to be presented orally.
The course will take place weeks 6-7 and week 12 2025.

Entry requirements
Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses
- - second-cycle degree,
- 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
- acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner
Specific entry requirements for this course is the completion of Basic Qualitative Methodology, 5 credits (grade Passed), or equivalent knowledge.
PhD students are admitted according to the following priority order:
- PhD students registered at the Faculty of Health Sciences or PhD students strongly connected to the Faculty of Health Sciences registered at other faculties within Linköping University
- PhD students registered at other faculties within Linköping University
- PhD students registered at other universities
Participation in the course of other students than above is only possible if there are fewer applicants from the above groups than students to be admitted.

Contents
The course content includes qualitative analysis methods, principles for trustworthiness and transferability in qualitative research, and data- and methods triangulation, including mixed methods.
Educational methods
The pedagogical approach applied at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is student centered, problem-based learning (PBL). The student takes responsibility for his/her own learning and seeks and evaluates information and knowledge based on own queries and formulated problems. The role of the teacher is to guide and support the students.
Educational methods applied in this course are lectures, tutorial groups (supervised and unsupervised) and seminars
Examination
The course is examined in an individual, written examination report. Students who fail are offered one re-examination occasion in close connection to the course. After that participation in a coming course examination is offered. The re-examination should be equally comprehensive as the ordinary examination.
Change of examiner
Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.

General information
The course is planned and carried out according to what is stated in this syllabus. Course evaluation, analysis and suggestions for improvement is fed back to the Research and PhD studies Committee (FUN) by the course coordinator.
If the course is withdrawn or is subject to major changes, examination according to this syllabus is normally offered at three occasions within/in close connection to the two following semesters.
