Description

The implementation research program at Linköping University offers this highly acclaimed course at postgraduate level, open also for post-doc researchers. The course has been given yearly since 2011. Teachers in the course are from Linköping University and other universities. The course has gained highly favourable course assessments and attracts PhD students from across Sweden and around the world.

This PhD-level course provides a broad introduction to the development of implementation science and the research conducted in this field. The aim is to increase understanding of the challenges of implementation in healthcare and convey in-depth knowledge concerning theories, models and frameworks that are of practical use in the participants’ own implementation research.

The course is taught in English and work is conducted on half-time basis. The course is available on-line or on-site at Linköping University. For those students who choose on-site learning, there are scheduled lectures and group discussions at two occasions at the university. Students who choose on-line learning will be able to access the course during these same dates. Course materials are studied in between meetings.

Entry requirements

Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses

  • second-cycle degree,
  • 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
  • acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

Contents

Implementation science is applied on the students’ own projects, building on and taking into account professional skills and academic experience. Examples of subjects elaborated on during the course are:

  • The history and development of implementation science
  • Terms, concepts, theories, models and frameworks relevant for implementation science
  • Implementation outcome
  • Strategies for implementation
  • Innovation research
  • Research use
  • Guideline development

Educational methods

The pedagogical approach applied at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is student centered, problem based learning (PBL). The student takes responsibility for his/her own learning, and seeks and evaluates information and knowledge based on own queries and formulated problems. The role of the teacher is to guide and support the students.

Educational methods applied in this course are lectures, group discussions, assignments and seminars.

Examination

The examination consists of a written assignment which is discussed in a final seminar. Each student presents and responds for his/her own work, and leads the discussion of a fellow student’s work.

Students who fail are offered one re-examination occasion in close connection to the course. After that participation in a coming course examination is offered. The re-examination should be equally comprehensive as the ordinary examination.

Change of examiner

Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.

General information

The course is planned and carried out according to what is stated in this syllabus. Course evaluation, analysis and suggestions for improvement should be fed back to the Research and PhD studies Committee (FUN) by the course coordinator.

If the course is withdrawn or is subject to major changes, examination according to this syllabus is normally offered at three occasions within/in close connection to the two following semesters.
