Academic work is fundamentally about producing knowledge and sharing it with the scientific community and with society. This course concentrates on the sharing part, i.e., how to communicate research to the scientific community. We study academic communication and the most common communication formats with two aims in mind: one is to start developing a sense of quality, and the other is to improve our academic communication skills. The course is oriented towards the academic subject of visualization and media technology.

Contents
Criteria for academic communication: internal relevance (including novelty), external relevance, groundedness. Structures, principles, and exemplars for academic writing (articles, dissertations, reports, and essays), presentation (live and recorded) and infographics (posters and visualizations). Overview of practical resources, techniques, and tools for academic communication.

The course has an introductory character and a disciplinary orientation towards visualization and media technology, meaning that the primary target group is MIT PhD students. It may also be relevant for PhD students from related subjects, such as computer science or design. The student-active format of the course, with show-and-tell sessions and a large practicum, is intended to accommodate PhD students on all stages of progression.
