Entry requirements

MAI0137 Applied Statistical Methods – Part I

Learning outcomes

The course is intended to apply different statistical methods to a real data set. By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • use an appropriate probability model to describe and analyse observed data and draw conclusions concerning interesting parameters;
  • explore the nature of the relationships between two or several variables by using different kinds of linear models and discuss the adequacy of the models;
  • use suitable software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab, depending on the students interests) for certain types of statistical analyses.

Contents

Analysis of data by using appropriate statistical software, e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab, depending on the students interests.

Educational methods

Computer example classes.

Examination

Statistical data analysis with an oral presentation. The statistical data analysis using statistical software should preferable be student oriented, i.e., the student could bring relevant datasets from his/her research field.

Grading

One-grade scale

Course literature

Depends on the students’ choice of data.
