Entry requirements
Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses
- second-cycle degree,
- 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
- acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe and critically discuss various forms of Extended Education as institutional arenas from a Nordic perspective
- critically evaluate and analyse key concepts within the field of Extended Education
- account for and critically review different research traditions related to Extended Education as a research field
- critically analyse their own research project in relation to Extended Education as a research field, and reflect on how the project may contribute to the further development of the field
Contents
The course provides an introduction to the research field of Extended Education, including school-age educare and other institutional forms of organised activities for children and young people outside the regular school day. The course focuses on contemporary research questions, theoretical perspectives, and the current state of the field nationally and internationally, with particular emphasis on Nordic contexts. The following areas are addressed:
· central traditions, as well as theoretical and methodological approaches within the field
· current developments and contemporary challenges within Extended Education in Nordic contexts
· variations in institutional models within extended education and their governance, organisation, and purposes
· extended education as an institutional arena in which key concepts such as teaching, upbringing, leisure, and care are analysed and critically discussed
Educational methods
Teaching is provided in the form of lectures, seminars, discussion groups, and independent study. Parts of the course will be delivered digitally, with one campus-based session held over three days.
Examination
Students prepare presentations and written assignments, partly through a final written task. If special circumstances apply, and if it is possible with regard to the design of the compulsory components, the examiner may decide to replace compulsory components with other equivalent components. Language of examination: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English.
Students who fail are offered one re-examination occasion in close connection to the course. After that participation in a coming course examination is offered. The re-examination should be equally comprehensive as the ordinary examination.
Change of examiner:
Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.
