Entry requirements

Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses

  • second-cycle degree,
  • 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
  • acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner

Specific information

The course is aimed at students admitted to the doctoral program in education with a focus on adult learning and other doctoral students with an interest in the issues addressed in the course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • describe how adult education, popular education and vocational and professional education are organized in Sweden
  • describe existing publication channels in the research field of adult learning

Competence and skills

  • describe and analyze adult learning as a field of knowledge in terms of contemporary trends in research objects, theories and methodologies

Judgement and approach

  • describe and analyze adult learning as a field of knowledge in relation to your own research project

Contents

The course offers an:

  • an overview of the organization of adult education, popular education and vocational and professional education in Sweden
  • overview of contemporary research on adult education, popular education and vocational and professional education, nationally and internationally
  • overview of publication channels in the research field of adult learning

Educational methods

The course is conducted in seminar form where the students participate with their own presentations as well as reviewing colleagues' work.

Examination

The course is examined through:

  • presentation of an analysis of an international journal in the research field of adult learning
  • a research paper presented at the last seminar of the course
  • commenting on a research paper by a fellow student
  • active participation in the seminar discussions

Students who fail are offered one re-examination occasion in close connection to the course. After that participation in a coming course examination is offered. The re-examination should be equally comprehensive as the ordinary examination.

Change of examiner

Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.

General information

If the course is withdrawn or is subject to major changes, examination according to this syllabus is normally offered at three occasions within/in close connection to the two following semesters.
