Description

The course deals with basic aspects and knowledge regarding scientific illustrations and the use of illustration software’s. The following parts are included:

  • Scientific graphical abstracts, their structure, language and content.
  • Conveying a scientific message in pictures/figures.
  • Condensing scientific information to brief key terms/statements.
  • The use of attractive color schemes and layouts.
  • Useful resources to complement scientific illustration.

Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses

  • second-cycle degree
  • 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
  • acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner

Specific entry requirements for this course

PhD students must have attended the course on 8FO0105 Scientific Communication and Information Retrieval or equivalent.

Specific information

The students need to have access to Inkscape (free), Affinity Designer or Adobe Illustrator.

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • Describe the principles for creating graphical abstracts.

  • Construct and present a scientific graphical abstract.
  • Use a graphic design program to create scientific illustrations.

  • Critically assess scientific illustrations with a particular focus on visual presentation and content

Contents

The course deals with basic aspects and knowledge regarding scientific illustrations and the use of illustration software’s. The following parts are included:

  • Scientific graphical abstracts, their structure, language and content.
  • Conveying a scientific message in pictures/figures.
  • Condensing scientific information to brief key terms/statements.
  • The use of attractive color schemes and layouts.
  • Useful resources to complement scientific illustration.

Educational methods

The pedagogical approach applied at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is student centered, problem-based learning (PBL). The student takes responsibility for his/her own learning and seeks and evaluates information and knowledge based on own queries and formulated problems. The role of the teacher is to guide and support the students.

Educational methods applied in this course are lectures, workshops and seminars. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to take part of online resource occasions.

Examination

The examination consists of:

  • Creating individual graphical abstract that are presented and discussed orally at an examination seminar.
  • Critical review and feedback of another student’s graphical abstract prior and during the examination seminar.

In addition to the above, active participation in mandatory components is required. The mandatory components of this course are workshops and seminars. The compulsory elements are workshops and examination seminars. If a student is absent from mandatory occasions, an additional occasion or assignments will be arranged in discussion with the course examinator.

Students who fail are offered one re-examination occasion in close connection to the course. After that participation in a coming course examination is offered. The re- examination should be equally comprehensive as the ordinary examination.

Change of examiner

Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.

General information

The course is planned and carried out according to what is stated in this syllabus. Course evaluation, analysis and suggestions for improvement should be fed back to the Research and PhD studies Committee (FUN) by the course coordinator.

If the course is withdrawn or is subject to major changes, examination according to this syllabus is normally offered at three occasions within/in close connection to the two following semesters.
