Entry requirements

The course is open to students admitted to a PhD education in a subject relevant to environmental science.

Specific information

For doctoral students admitted to the Environmental Science program, a total of 7,5 hp in interdisciplinary studies are mandatory. This course plan comprises the 2 hp reserved for interdisciplinary studies within the Environmental Science program.

Learning outcomes

Upon the completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Critically reflect upon interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies in environmental science;
  • Account for different interdisciplinary ontologies, epistemologies and methodologies in environmental science;
  • Critically reflect upon and situate his/her PhD work in relation to environmental science in an interdisciplinary context.

Contents

The course offers a critical perspective on inter-and transdisciplinary research in environmental science, including opportunity to reflect on aspects such as societal relevance, the role of influence, privilege, and power in knowledge production, as well as methodological challenges for knowledge co-production and transdisciplinary research. We explore how these perspectives relate to the students’ own PhD projects, and explore challenges and opportunities for inter-and transdisciplinary Environmental Science.

Examination

The examination consists of

  • One individually written course paper.
  • Active participation in seminars through general discussion and individual preparation, in accordance with instructions in the course handbook.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
