Learning outcomes

The course is an introduction to several key methods for analyzing empirical material. The participants will familiarize themselves theoretically with a selection of analysis methods and will apply them through practical exercises. The course is designed to provide ample opportunities for reflection and discussion of perspectives, theories and methods in qualitative research.

On completion of the course, the PhD candidate will be able to:

  • describe and discuss key analysis methods;
  • assess and review a variation of analysis methods in their own and others’ work; and
  • evaluate strengths and weaknesses of these methods.

Contents

The course centers on a selection of analysis methods that are relevant and central both for solid research at the PhD level and for the participants’ future career as scholars that conduct research of their own and assess and review others’ scholarship. The course also addresses research ethics in analysis.

Educational methods

The course consists of lectures, seminars, and practical exercises.

Examination

The examination consists of the following components:

  • Active participation in all course sessions
  • Completion of all practical exercises
  • Completion of a review assignment
  • Completion of a final examination assignment.

The course literature consists of scientific articles and book chapters. The literature list is required preparatory reading, unless otherwise indicated.
