Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to provide a theoretical orientation on logistics in supply chains. This can concern both inter-organizational aspects, regarding the perspective of several actors in a supply chain, as well as intra-organizational, regarding the connection of logistics to other functions within an individual company. The course should contribute to an understanding of various general logistics strategies and their consequences. After completing the course, the student must:

  • Be familiar with theoretical concepts (e.g. supply chain management, flexibility, coordination, integration, outsourcing, integration, supplier controlled warehouses, purchasing strategies and production strategies) and their connection to logistics and company logistics strategies.
  • Understand how the theoretical concepts are connected to each other and their inherent dependencies.
  • Understand driving forces, obstacles and prerequisites for different basic logistics arrangements in supply chains.
  • Be able to apply the theoretical concepts and their meaning, and based on this be able to understand, explain, evaluate and question different logistics strategies in companies as well as supply chains.
  • Be able to summarize, evaluate and question journal articles in a structured way.

Contents

The course deals with inter-organizational issues regarding logistics between companies in a supply chain, e.g. the flow from raw material supplier via manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer to industrial end customers. Intra-organizational issues are also an important part of the content, e.g. logistics for inflows (material supply) and outflows (distribution) and its connection to e.g. the purchasing, production and marketing functions. The parts that are discussed in the logistics setup are e.g. physical structures, role distribution between actors, logistics activities, physical flows and information flows. The course deals with driving forces, obstacles and barriers, as well as requirements and prerequisites, for different types of logistics arrangements in supply chains.

Educational methods

In lectures, basic theoretical concepts, principles, models, concepts and strategies regarding supply chains are presented. At seminars, various concepts and alternative logistics arrangements are discussed and analyzed as support for submission tasks. In addition to scheduled teaching, reading takes place with the help of selected literature that illuminates different areas within the course.

Examination

The results in the examination stages are combined and form the basis for course grades.
