The course provides an overview of current research topics and challenges in the intersection between design and the public sector. Course content span all levels of and across pluralistic systems in public sector, and opens up for interdisciplinary dialogue

Entry requirements

Doctoral students interested in the intersection between design research and the public sector. It is beneficial, but not necessary, to have a background in design, public sector innovation, or similar. The course is open to PhD students around the world.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students:

-have an overview of current research topics and challenges in the intersection between design and the public sector

-have a developed understanding of how their work relates to work conducted in this intersection

-gain further insight into possibilites and limitations of research in society

Contents

The seminars focus on research topics and challenges in the intersection between design and the public sector. The speakers are invited to give an open seminar, and then to discuss with a group of researchers about their research.

The specific topics for the seminars are sent out with the course information after registering for the course.

Educational methods

This course centers around a series of open seminars combined with researcher seminars, in total 4 hours in length. Students are expected to participate in these seminars, and contribute actively to the researcher seminar.

Students prepare by reading and commenting on related work. Preparatory work should be shared with the examiner, and be used as a foundation for the discussion during the researcher seminar. A written reflection should be submitted after the final seminar. Specific instructions will be sent to participating PhD students.

Related work will be distributed beforehand.

Examination

To pass this course, the students must:

  1. Attend the seminars,
  2. Prepare for each seminar by reviewing associated reading materials and sending this to the examiner,
  3. Produce a written reflection after the course.
