Description

The course is intended for first-year doctoral students as an introduction to quantitative methodology and basic forms of statistical analysis, including hands-on exercises. As the course will not provide a full discussion on specific methods, it is recommended to be taken before any specialized courses. The course has no preliminary requirements for participating students, but it helps to have a basic understanding of statistics.

The course consists of three parts. The first part provides an introduction to the philosophical foundations and typical characteristics of quantitative research in the field of business research, as well as typical research designs, data sources and analysis methods used in such research. The second part focuses on basic forms of statistical analysis, including t-test, ANOVA, regression analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis, and includes workshops conducted with SPSS. The third part introduces students to psychometrics: how do we measure things and how can we assess the quality of such measures, as well as concepts of validity and reliability. The part also discusses basics of path modeling.

Completing the course requires participation in seminars and workshops (or complementary assignments), writing short reports on contemporary quantitative articles, and writing an essay on how quantitative methods could or will be applied in the participant’s own research.

All teaching will take place in classroom at LiU Campus valla.

Open for registration in January.
